GUAYAQUIL
Guayaquil, city located on the Gulf of Guayaquil,
main geographical accident on the South American coast,
on the banks of the Guayas River, the biggest river of
the Pacific Coast of the Americas.
Surrounded by sea branches and hills, its natural beauty
and dry tropical forest, make it one of the best
destinations in the world for ecotourism, especially for
bird watchers. In the city, in its parks and gardens,
especially in the “Malecón”, on the bank of the River,
you can observe more than 150 varieties of birds, many
of them are endemic, in other words, unique in the
world.

The “Malecon 2000” (Boarder walk) is the greatest
achievement of the city’s urban regeneration; it’s
several kilometers long and includes a shopping
center, craft market, restaurants, cinema, museum,
botanical park, river tours, playgrounds for kids
and entertainment for adults. |
Guayaquil, is a privileged city because it’s at sea level,
with its mild tropical climate all year round. It is known
as a light destination, in other words, where you can travel
light, no heavy traveling bags, because you don’t need ties,
or jackets in restaurants or tourist’s sites. Since it’s an
excellent shopping destination, your luggage can return
with: articles carved in balsa wood, tagua (vegetable
ivory), ceramic, fabrics, jewelry, and also paintingst.

Guayaquil is History
One of the most ancient American cultures settled In
Guayaquil and its surroundings, The “Valdivia” culture,
which goes back to 3900 BC, and registers the first works of
pottery, and villages. It is also known for the cleverness
of their navigators and merchants, who on boats made of
balsa could carry up to 10 tons of goods, using a system of
multiple rudders which allowed them to navigate against the
currents, taking their merchandise from “Tierra del Fuego”
in the south, up to the Aztec Empire in Mexico.

Guayaquil is the mixing pot of Ecuadorian cultures and also
of other cultures of the world,
which are reflect in the restaurants and all the
gastronomical pleasures the city has to offer, where the
richness of sea food (lobsters, shrimps, crabs) are combined
with all the delicious products of the land, among them the
exotic tropical fruits.
Guayaquil, a safe city for tourists
Among the programs of Urban Regeneration created by the
Municipality of Guayaquil, there is a program called
“Más Seguridad” (More Security).
This program includes all the tourist areas of Guayaquil;
they are protected by the Metropolitan Police and are
also under the protection given by the National Police.
More than 100 surveillance cameras have been installed
and offer a 24 hour service, these cameras have been
installed in strategic places and at the same time the
different security forces are communicated by radio, so,
any tourist visiting the protected areas: Museums,
gardens and parks, renovated down town, The “Cerro Santa
Ana” and its viewpoint, the “Malecon 2000” (3Km next to
the river, with museums, shopping centers, restaurants,
gardens, etc) are constantly under surveillance, in
other words, safe. In other parts of the city
precautions should be taken, as in any other big city of
the world.
Guayaquil is popular art
In all the murals under the overpasses and many building
fronts where works of art are exhibited, which makes
this city unique because of its originality.
Guayaquil is sports,
it has one of the 20 biggest stadiums in the world
(85,000 spectators), excellent golf fields, tennis
courts, and all the water sports at the beaches located
an hour away. It registers 10 world records in sports
fishing, excellent beaches for surfing (Montañita) and
other sea sports.

Guayaquil has an exciting nightlife,
with its casinos, bars, and Discos, ideal complements to
the facilities it offers as a city of fairs, congresses, and
conventions.
The “Recinto Ferial de Duran, Expoplaza, deluxe hotels, the
“Centro Civico” (Civic Center) Theatre and “Centro de Arte”;
(Art Center), and the different congress auditoriums; which
accommodate from 500 to 3500 persons.
Guayaquil is a shopping port
It counts with more than 15 modern shopping centers, besides
the popular markets (flea-markets- bahías) where you can
find all types of merchandise from all around the world,
thanks to the combination of its port and intercontinental
airport, which operates 24 hours, 365 days of the year.
Guayaquil is a city which offers more of its urban beauty
and its nature.
It’s Ecuador’s main entrance and port, and from where you
start your visit to Galapagos, this is why this city
captures all the magic of the South Pacific.

General Advice
The best time of the year to visit Guayaquil:
From May to December: Dry season and moderate climate
From January to April: Rainy season, enchanting for
those who enjoy tropical abundance, warmer climate. This
is the beach season, when the beach charms can be fully
enjoyed (school vacation in the Ecuadorian coast)
