Loja
“Lulled by the sweet whisper of the playful
streams”
Surrounded by green and bluish hills, Loja is between the
Zamora River and the Malacatos, Loja is land of outstanding
musical talents, writers, and artist. It’s name evokes Loja
of Spain, where Alfonso de Mercadillo, founder of the city,
was born.
The colonial architecture of its old edifications is one of
the main attractions for the visitor, who can observe the
Hispanic influence it has.
Corridors, tiled roofs, eaves, and interior courtyards; are
part of the features of many constructions which form part
of the royal legacy. One of the main buildings is the Old
“Casona” which is from the first third of the XVII century,
home of the Museum of the Central Bank and the Bernardino
Valdivieso Museum. Among the impressive monumental works,
are the churches, as the Cathedral, Santo Domingo or San
Juan del Valle. Some of them shelter rich religious art
(oleos and sculptures) with works of authors as Fray Enrique
Mideros…

LOJA:
Its historic down town is architecturally interesting. There
you can admire small and authentic colonial houses.
Visit the Cathedral, which is a well restored church,
adorned, and with interesting sculptures and which,
traditionally, days before the 8th of September,
receives the “Virgen del Cisne”. You can also visit the
churches in down town Loja: San Francisco, San Agustín,
Santo Domingo, San Sebastián, Fatima, all of these churches
have an interesting architecture, and shelter great amount
of religious art.
VILCABAMBA
In Quichua language it means: “Sacred Plain” located south
of Loja city, it became world wide famous, when Doctor
Eugene H. Payne signaled it as one of the few “islands of
immunity” of the planet. Later it was known as “Valley of
the Long-lived”, since its inhabitants, as an average, live
more than 100 years, visitors still keep coming to this
valley, some just for curiosity, others for tourism, or to
learn what to do to live longer; over all because of the low
incidence of cardiovascular deceases and of arteriosclerosis
among its inhabitants.
MALACATOS:
This valley has en excellent subtropical climate, it counts
with privileged landscapes, worthy of admiration.
CATAMAYO:
When you visit this valley you will get to know one of the
biggest and most productive valleys in Loja, it is irrigated
by the Guayabal and Catamayo Rivers, which allows and
excellent agricultural production.
EL
CISNE:
This parish is located on the highest part of a cliff and
next to a small village; its Cathedral is dedicated to the
worship of the Virgin “del Cisne”, patron of the city and
the province.
The sculpture of “La Churona” (name given to this virgin),
which is inside the Cathedral, is attributed to Diego
Robles, famous sculptor of Colonial times. The worship to
the Virgin gained popularity when Simon Bolivar the
Liberator, order an annual celebration. In September the
people from Loja and thousands of all the country come to
venerate the miraculous Virgin “del Cisne”.
SARAGURO:
Located on the slope of the Puglia, it’s inhabited by the
Indian community, Saraguro , which has managed an important economical situation in comparison to
the rest of the Indian population of the country, who also
have preserved their culture and traditions in an exemplary
way. Here you can also visit the valleys of Catacocha,
Célica, Gonzanamá, Alamor, and Zapotillo, all this valleys
have a varied agricultural production, mild climate and
beautiful landscapes.
PARQUE NACIONAL PODOCARPUS:
With an extension of 146,000 hectare, this park was created
with the purpose of protecting the greatest population of
Podocarpus, centennial trees, which subsist in small forests
on the foothill of the Podocarpus mount range.
In the interior of the park you can hike several days and
admire beautiful landscapes, orchids, and birds. You can
also go to the Lakes “del Compadre”, among these are the
“Campaña” and “Margarita”, habitat for the “rainbow” trout.
On the surroundings you can observe several species of trees
as “El Romerillo” and the “Podocarpus”, wild flowers,
pumas, bears with “glasses”, skunks, and dears
